Sandland Webb

Sandland “Sandy” Webb passed away in Bellevue, Idaho, on November 20, 2017, surrounded by his three daughters and his dog Sam. Born in Attleboro, Massachusetts on March 11, 1935, the youngest son of Edmund Charles Webb and Marjorie Sandland Webb, Sandy grew up playing golf competitively while attending Attleboro High School and Yale (’57). At Yale he studied engineering and was a member of Phi Gamma Delta and the ROTC. He served as Second Lieutenant in the US Army in Korea.

Sandy and Hannah Schoentgen were married in 1960, and raised three daughters in Pasadena, CA. After the marriage ended in 1980, Sandy met Sharon Wolcott and enjoyed a long friendship with her and her three daughters, calling the blended families “The Girls’ School", and sharing his love of the natural world with all six girls.

Sandy was an outdoorsman from an early age, fishing on Cape Cod, skiing in Vermont, and bird hunting in the desert, but it was after he moved to California that his love affair with the Eastern Sierras began. His second home was in Mammoth Lakes and it was there that he skied and backpacked for nearly 65 years, inspiring his daughters to do the same. Over the years, Sandy made dear friends, young and old, and as one noted, “He showed us how to see more by showing us what he saw.” Those who knew and loved him will always remember his wisdom, kindness, and humor, and his great joy in exploring the beauties of nature.

Sandy is survived by daughters Hilary Webb, Jocelyn Webb Pedersen (Erik), and Melissa Webb Araya (Carlos) and grandchildren, Walker and Ford Pedersen and Penelope and Mateo Araya.

A memorial service is planned for Saturday, June 23, 2018, at Lake Mary in Mammoth Lakes, CA. Donations may be made in Sandy’s name to the Nature Conservancy.
