Life Story for
Theodore "Nick" Nicolai III
Nick Nicolai died peacefully at his home in Ketchum on September 4, 2012. He was born on August 14, 1935 in Vancouver BC, Canada, to Theodore Nicolai II and Ina Claire Nicolai. Nick graduated from Garibaldi High School in Garibaldi, Oregon and attended the University of Oregon and the University of Alaska. He was an instructor in the U.S. Army arctic survival unit.
Nick married Cicely Boggs on September 17, 1960, in Portland, Oregon. They ran a guest ranch in Camp Sherman, Oregon, for many years until Nick was asked by his father to come and run the family business. He served as President and CEO of Nicolai Door Company in Portland until his retirement in 1986.
Nick was an avid mountain climber, member of the American Alpine Club and climbed many peaks in Europe, Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. His first love was the sea and he was an accomplished mariner who sailed to many ports of call, including Tahiti, Alaska, the coast of British Columbia and the Queen Charlotte Islands.
He was a very giving member of our Ketchum community supporting many organizations and individuals. He was a past board member of Hospice of the Wood River Valley, as well as a supporter of the Idaho Conservation League, Community Library, Sun Club and Souper Suppers.
Nick is survived by his two sons, Thad Nicolai (Mary Beth Collins) and Henry Nicolai of Ketchum, four grandchildren, Allegra, Sophia, Isabel and Nicholas Nicolai, of Everett, Colorado, and his sister, Brenda Curnutt (John) of Madras, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his spouse, Cicely Nicolai. There will be a private memorial service, but memorials are suggested to the Hospice of the Wood River Valley, P.O.Box 4320, Ketchum, ID 83340.
