Obituary for
James J. Brett
Born Oct. 25, 1923, in Oakland, Calif., James Jay Brett, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2011, in Ketchum, Idaho. The son of Lillian and Ralph Brett, his unwavering love toward his wife, Kathy, started at the mere sight of her picture, with a marriage lasting 52 years. Jim's life passed according to his wishes, peacefully surrounded by family, lovingly embracing his wife until the end. Jim was an avid runner and hiker, a voracious reader and a most faithful friend. He was a lifelong learner, always offering books and articles to others, knowing they would find them enriching to their life. His infectious enthusiasm couldn't help rub off on those he came in contact with.
Enamored by the natural beauty of the Wood River Valley, he and Kathy retired to Hailey, Idaho, after raising their family in Los Angeles. During his 19 years there, he shared a deep connection with nature. Always a true gentleman, respectful, with a sincere interest in others, he cherished each of his many relationships, including the lifelong group of friends who gathered for annual hiking trips in the Sierras for 40 years.
Jim will be remembered for his dry wit, love of humor, his true interest in others, service to our country and immense pride in his three children, seven grandchildren and his great-grandchilden.
Services will be held at the Presbyterian Church of the Big Wood in Ketchum, Idaho, at 10:30 a.m., Dec. 10. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made to the Hospice of the Wood River Valley, Box 4320, 507 First Ave. N., Ketchum, ID 83340. Words cannot express our gratitude to Hospice for their guidance, care and concern as they helped him to his final peace.
