Obituary

Philip Paul Schaefer, 72, passed away October 26, 2020 in Ketchum, Idaho with his wife and daughter by his side.

Phil was born July 30, 1948 in Great Falls, Montana to Roman and Tess Schaefer.

He lived abroad for a good part of his youth in Cambridge and Greenham Commons, England where he became an Eagle Scout. He returned to the U.S. and finished high school in Bellevue, Nebraska. Phil attended the University of Nebraska, graduating in 1972.

After graduating in Nebraska, he moved to Tacoma, Washington where he began working in the car business. In 1983, he began purchasing Tacoma Dodge and was also partners in the Tacoma Nissan and Tacoma Subaru dealerships. Phil retired in 2010 and made Sun Valley, Idaho his permanent residence.

While tremendously successful in business, Phil’s real success was in life. He was intelligent, funny, kind and generous. Truly an authentic person. He touched peoples’ lives and brought laughter to everyone in his life. Always present in the moment, he often was unfiltered, which was a refreshing part of who he was. He loved giving people he cared about nicknames and if you had one you knew you were loved.

Phil had a great attitude towards his 15 year struggle with Parkinson’s Disease and kept his sense of humor to the end. Prior to Parkinson’s Disease, Phil was an athlete; biking, skiing, golfing and his favorite softball. He loved being part of a team and hitting bombs over the left field fence.

Phil is survived by his wife Lynn, daughter Kaelen, grandson Kaden, brothers Robert (Bobbi) and Flynn (Andi) with numerous nieces and nephews.

A Celebration of Life will be planned at a future date.

Phil’s Memorial Page is available at woodriverchapel.com where friends may leave a message or share a photo.

I will miss you Phil. What a great relationship you And Lynn shared together. Two of my favorite people. Thanks for all the laughter. That’s the first thing I think of when I think of you. And your generosity. Thanks for your generosity. I don’t have the words to express my sadness but my heart holds them.
Much love to Lynn, his daughter, his grandson and the family.

This beautiful sentiment was sent to us from our dear friend Jeanne Naccarato

Don't spend too much time in mourning
Tears are for the sad
I left to be with Jesus
And this should make you glad,

Don't waste your hours grieving
No need to feel distress
I'm tired of life's frustrations
And I had to get some rest.

Don't mix yourself with questions
Or try to reason why
Life for me has ended
It came my time to die.

Don't lose the love I gave you
Feed it with your care
Grieve it with devotion
And spread it everywhere.

Don't fret because my leaving
came in such a way
We'll have another meeting
In GOD's eternal day.

In memory of my husband, Phil

I met Phil through softball in the early to mid 90's and became good friends via this crazy sport. As we grew together in friendship I've had 2 of my 3 sons work for him and they both stated "Phil is really cool" but he's a lot like you dad, he won't let us get away with anything! LOL Phil was also a mentor to me.....in business as well as in life! He was REAL! And with this, he was able to earn the respect of many people as well as other successful business people and have a positive influence in their businesses and life. Phil shared with my family his generosity in staying at his Sun valley home to ski, invitations and golf to his home in La Quinta as well as many fundraisers and fancy dinners. While Phil wasn't "showy"....he did appreciate the finer things in life. And his most important was his beautiful wife Lynn! Their marriage together was a beautiful match and both were so blessed in their time together. I was so sad when I spoke with Phil and saw him in his not so good later days......and we all question....why God? We just have to keep the faith and know HIS ways are higher than our ways and believe Phil is in a beautiful place now, free of pain and experiencing the greatest thing we are looking forward to...eternal life with our creator. Till we see each other again.....save me a place Phil! Love you!

We are going to miss Phil dearly! He was a great friend, fun loving and compassionate. He loved sports, especially playing slow pitch. He was a generous sponsor and played the game enthusiastically. Phil was always willing to help people who knew him and those who didn’t know him. Phil was a successful businessman and treated his employees like family. I will miss and remember Phil’s smiles, empathy and encouragement. Phil was a great human being, a wonderful husband to Lynn and loving father to his daughter Kaelen! RIP Phil!
