Life Story for Lila Corrock

Lila Corrock
Lila Corrock, long time Ketchum resident, died peacefully at St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center on
Tuesday, December 5th. Lila was born in Cordova, Alaska Territory on May 23, 1927 to Edward and
Naima Saari. Both parents were Finnish and found their way to Alaska shortly after the First World War.
In 1939, the family moved to Seattle where Ed found work at the Boeing Airplane Company transporting
Lend Lease airplanes over the Al-Can highway to Russia.

Lila met Jack at James Madison Junior High and they become fast friends. This friendship ultimately
resulted in a marriage of over 69 years. She graduated from West Seattle High School and attended the
University of Washington majoring in microbiology. During that time, Jack joined the Merchant Marine.
After the war, they married and settled in West Seattle.

Lila developed a love for skiing with Jack, vacationing each winter in Sun Valley with friends. Their
dream was to spend a year living in the Alps. In 1960, the opportunity came and the family moved to
Kitzbuehel, Austria for the winter. They spent the next five months traveling Europe in a Volkswagen
bus. It was Lila who kept the family healthy and nurtured a lifelong love of skiing and camping.

Jack and Lila, along with a group of skiing friends, built an Austrian style hotel and restaurant at Crystal
Mountain Ski Area. Lila would take reservations at home in Seattle while raising the kids. Jack would
run the hotel mid-week with Lila heading up the mountain on Fridays after school. Those years skiing as
a family at Crystal taught the kids enough for each to enjoy a successful ski career and for middle child
Susie to win an Olympic medal in Sapporo Japan.

In 1970, the family moved to Sun Valley, fulfilling a lifelong dream. Lila enjoyed volunteering at the Gold
Mine. She also served on the Community Library Board. She loved to garden and had one of the most
diverse and original gardens in the area, experimenting with plants that would grow in the harsh
Ketchum climate. Her garden was once featured on the Community Library’s annual Sawtooth Botanical
Garden Tour. Lila always said, she loved her garden, her dog, and the neighborhood kids.

Lila and Jack developed a passion for windsurfing and spent time in Hawaii, South Padre Island, and on
the Baja where they built a small home with a true desert garden. Lila taught knitting to the local
children at their school. She was affectionately known as Abuela Lila.

Lila spent her later years traveling around Idaho with Jack, camping, boating, and hiking. It is best
described that Lila had a life well lived.

Lila is preceded in death by her parents and survived by her husband, Jack, sister Alice Davidson,
children Kenny Corrock, Susie Luby, Anne Corrock Wrobel, six grandchildren Lily Corrock, Tyler Corrock,
Kevin Luby, Christy Luby, Mackenzie Harbaugh, Whit Harbaugh, and her beloved dog Sisu. The family
sends their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Hospice of Wood River, along with those at St. Luke’s for their
exceptional care and compassion.

Memorial donations may be made to the Animal Shelter of Wood
River Valley.

There will be a Celebration of Lila’s life sometime in the spring when her garden is in full bloom.
